Red Bull Magnitude contest is set to return in December 2021
As winter approaches, the big wave surf season is about to kickoff. There will be huge swells and even bigger rides by some of the best surfers in the world. Hawaii is set to host the Red Bull Magnitude contest for a second year beginning in December.
The inaugural Red Bull Magnitude event took place last year following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. A shift to a digital format was required and this all-female big wave contest checked all the boxes. A three-month-long window gave riders the freedom to pick and choose the best waves to submit for prizes. All the big surf breaks in Hawaii were eligible and film and safety crews were sent out to help the athletes. All projected swells that measure over 12 foot Hawaiian/ 24 foot regular will have crews on hand to capture these epic rides.
Some huge names took part in the action but it was Keala Kennelly who took home the big prize. This year they are running it back and the fans cannot wait. Other athletes who participated last year about could be on hand for the second time are, Raquel Heckert, Paige Alms, Annie Reichert, Justine Dupont, Emi Erickson, Maddie Anzivino, and Kaya Waldman.
“Last year really helped bring up the new generation of big-wave surfers,” Kennelly said. “I got to surf with some up-and-coming talents that I had never surfed with and it was inspiring to see them push their limits and grow their capabilities. I can’t wait to see what this year has in store.”
The judges, Betty DePolito, Rochelle Ballard, and Kai Lenny will be looking to give out $50,000 in prizes to the best rides. The categories will be Overall Champion, Best Tow-In, Best Ride, and Biggest Wave presented by Yeti. There will also be a People’s Choice award given out. The overall winner will receive $35,000. The judges will convene in the first week of March and the winners will be announced after that.
