Nathan Florence on the flexibility of this year’s Van’s Triple Crown event
This year the Van’s Triple Crown event was a little different. The longtime running event usually will see the best surfing has to offer pitted up against each other at three legendary surf locations, Haleiwa, Sunset, and Pipeline. This year the locations are the same and that is pretty much it. The contest ran in digital format where surfers could sign up and compete with some of the best out there. You just needed to submit your best wave in the waiting period and maybe be a champion. Nathan Florence spoke to Fansided.com about the event.
“I thought it was a great idea,” Florence told FanSided. “We had done something every year, something called The Wave of the Winter where it’s an online thing, everybody tries to submit their best waves of the winter to win 25 thousand dollars and obviously bragging rights to the best wave of the winter. For Vans to take it in stride, the Triple Crown, and instead of canceling, say let’s make this a digital competition and give everyone a chance to compete for the Triple Crown title. Now you have the freedom to choose when to surf the spots.”
The winners will be announced Tuesday Jan. 26 at 8pm PT. In the meantime many great surfers got out there and killed it in the waves.
