As winter approaches, the big wave surf season in Hawaii is about to kick off once again. There will be huge swells and even bigger rides by some of the best surfers in the world. Hawaii is set to host the Red Bull Magnitude contest for the third year in a row, beginning this December.

The inaugural Red Bull Magnitude event took place in 2020 following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. A shift to a digital format was required and this all-female big wave contest checked all the boxes. A three-month-long window gave riders the freedom to pick and choose the best waves to submit for prizes. All the big surf breaks in Hawaii were eligible and film and safety crews were sent out to help the athletes. All projected swells that measure over 12-foot Hawaiian or 24-foot regular will have crews on hand to capture these epic rides.

Some huge names took part in the action but it was Skylar Lickle, who took home the Overall Performer Award last year. This year they are running it back and the fans cannot wait. Other athletes who participated in previous years and could be on hand for the second or third time are, Raquel Heckert, Paige Alms, Annie Reichert, Justine Dupont, Emi Erickson, Maddie Anzivino, Katie McConnell, and Kaya Waldman.

“Last year really helped bring up the new generation of big-wave surfers,” Kennelly said of the first season of this contest. “I got to surf with some up-and-coming talents that I had never surfed with and it was inspiring to see them push their limits and grow their capabilities. I can’t wait to see what this year has in store.”

The Red Bull Magnitude Contest Will Feature Some Of The Best Big Wave Surfers In The World

Last year the judges, Betty DePolito, Rochelle Ballard, and Kai Lenny gave out $50,000 in prizes to the best rides. The categories will be Overall Champion, Best Tow-In, Best Ride, Best Paddle Award, and Biggest Wave presented by Yeti. There will also be a People’s Choice award given out. The overall winner will receive $35,000. The judges will convene in the first week of March and the winners will be announced after that.
