In the surfing world, you have real champions, specialists, film stars, and surf bums. But why can’t we bring that all together in one surf film? That is exactly what Rip Curl has done with The Kangs. The Kangs is the new surf flick produced by Rip Curl featuring former champions Mick Fanning and Gabriel Medina alongside Mason Ho. It almost seems like a blending of the generations with former champion Mick Fanning as the older, more experienced surfer, ripping right alongside more recent champion Gabriel Medina who is still at the top of his game. Adding in some comedic tidbits by Mason Ho this film hits all angles.

The film starts off in black-and-white somewhere in Australia, then in an almost Wizard of Oz-esque moment when they enter the water it bursts into color. These three fan-favorite surfers are on “the search” for some good waves down under.

The Kangs is a great surf flick featuring an array of surfing stars, including two world champs

This wasn’t the typical five-star surf resort trip for these three. They travel through remote Australia in search of some pristine waves while tracking a swell. They often stopped at rest stops and gas stations just to eat. There were cups of noodles and meat pies that left fans laughing when Mason Ho described his stomach discomfort.

In the end, the surfing was aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Fans will surely be watching this film over and over again, especially in places where the summer stoke is stalled until the end of the summer.

The film is directed by Vaughan Blakey and Nick Pollet. It was filmed by Nick Pollet, Mikey Corker, Rory Pringle, and Stuart Gibson. The music is great as well, songs include “Horwood and the Frog” by Benny Reed (Skeggs), “Angels” by Flying Machine, “Universe” by Colbey, “Ride Alone” by Benny Reed (Skeggs), “Blues Train Rider” by The Mojo Corner, and “Wide Open Land” by Floodlights.

The Kangs film is up now on the Rip Curl YouTube page.
